Despite the best efforts of Rikuo's group, they find themselves unable to destroy the dead attacking them. Each time they cut one down, it is immediately revived thanks to the group's mysterious attacker. Leaving Rikuo et al. to be slaughtered by the dead, their attacker returns to a small shrine further up the mountain. There, Akifusa is working on reforging Nenekirimaru.
Rikuo's attacker, Taisei, confronts Akifusa with the new knowledge that the latter is planning to give a spirit blade to a yōkai. He berates Akifusa for sullying the true purpose of Onmyōjutsu and threatens to kill him. Taisei also declares his regret at having taught Akifusa so much about swordsmithing, despite knowing the latter was from the Keikain House. Akifusa, now aware that Rikuo is on the mountain, tries to reason with Taisei by explaining their goal of defeating the Nue - unfortunately, this only makes the situation worse as Taisei reveals himself to be Abe no Seimei's descendant and well aware that Seimei and the Nue are one and the same. Summoning forth a deadly scythe made of spirit blades, Taisei prepares to attack and kill Akifusa. Suddenly, the door is kicked down and Rikuo, a bit worse for wear, enters - asking Akifusa which sword in the place is Nenekirimaru.
