Shōkera is an insect yōkai who reports the sins of humans to the heavens while they sleep. Legend says that Shōkera comes forth once every 60 days on "Koushin," the 57th day. Heaven then takes the lives of those who have sinned. This is why people must not sleep on the day of Koushin. To avoid this, one would spend the entire day praying to a statue of the raging god, Shōmen Kongō.
