Bakeneko (化け猫, lit. "ghost cat") are cat yōkai in Japanese folklore which possess supernatural abilities. A cat may become one in a wide variety of ways, including living for a certain number of years, growing to a certain size, etc. They are generally able to shapeshift into human form and will haunt the household in which it was kept. Stories depict them as either beneficial or malicious spirits. They are sometimes interchangeable with Nekomata, which are Bakeneko whose tails have forked in two.
