Aobōzu (青坊主) is a yōkai mentioned in many folk stories, varying based on the region of origin. He is generally represented as a monk with either blue/green skin or blue/green clothes. In Shizuoka Prefecture, he appears at night among the wheat stalks of a cornfield to carry off wayward children in springtime. In Okayama Prefecture, he appears in abandoned houses and is sometimes said to be a yōkai who shows up when people are absent. In Yamaguchi Prefecture, he is a mountain god who appears before humans and lures them into a futile sumo match. Though he seems to have a small body, because he is a godlike entity, those who underestimate and challenge him find themselves cast aside, putting their lives in danger.
